Planning

Visual storytelling is often a beautiful illusion. While the final image captures a moment of effortless style, the reality behind the scenes is frequently a test of endurance and creativity. Our recent campaign for La Bonita, a surf-inspired bikini brand born in Las Terrenas, is the perfect example of how a "dreamy" production can be a logistical masterpiece—and a bit of a struggle.
The Vision vs. The Reality
The concept was simple yet ambitious: a vintage Citroën Mehari on the shores of Playa Coson, perfectly embodying the tropical surf aesthetic of the Dominican Republic. There was just one major problem—the car didn't actually run. To bring this vision to life, we had to think outside the box, proving that being a photographer in the Dominican Republic often requires as much problem-solving as it does technical skill.
Logistics on a Tow Truck
Since the Mehari couldn't make it to the beach on its own, we had to hire a tow truck to transport it from town all the way to the wild coast of Coson. Loading a vintage car with all our professional photography gear and surfboards was a spectacle in itself. In commercial photography, you learn quickly that if the props won't move, you move the props. It was a race against the clock to get the vehicle positioned before the light shifted.
Pushing for the Perfect Frame
Once at the beach, the real physical work began. We had to manually push the Mehari across the soft sand to reach the exact spot where the palms and the ocean met the golden afternoon glow. It’s funny to think that while people see a photo of ultimate freedom and "surfer chic" lifestyle, our team was behind the scenes sweating and pushing a dead car. But as a content creator in Las Terrenas, these are the lengths we go to for that one iconic shot.
The Magic of the Final Campaign
Once the Mehari was perfectly placed, the magic finally happened. The vibrant colors of the La Bonita bikinis popped against the vintage teal of the car, creating a retro-surf vibe that looked completely effortless. We captured the essence of the brand—fun, resilient, and deeply connected to the Dominican Republic coast. The contrast between the "galère" of the setup and the serenity of the final images is what makes this project so special.
Conclusion
This shoot was a reminder that photography is more than just a camera and a lens—it’s about the grit required to create a "Tropical Mirage." Behind every flawless campaign for a brand like La Bonita, there is a story of determination and a team willing to push a car through the sand just for the sake of art.
As a photographer in Dom Rep, my mission is to handle the chaos behind the lens so that your brand’s audience only sees the dream.
