The Story of Sienna Studio

Photography is often about being in the right place at the right time, but sometimes, it’s about a rescue mission. When a professional FPV drone pilot sponsored by GoPro contacted me on Instagram after crashing his drone into the ocean at Playa Ballenas, a unique challenge began. The mission was clear: recover the drone and the footage trapped underwater, and in exchange, I would receive the latest GoPro of the year.

Collaboration with Local Expertise

Searching for a tiny drone in the vast turquoise waters of Las Terrenas is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I quickly realized that to succeed, I needed the deep environmental knowledge of the local community. I partnered with a local fisherman, promising him professional fishing gear if we found the device. Three days later, his expertise paid off—the drone was recovered. This collaboration is the heart of my work as a photographer in the Dominican Republic: respecting and working with the local "savoir-faire."

From Recovery to Creation

Once the drone was returned and the pilot, Gochi, successfully retrieved his footage—which had survived days underwater—I received my brand-new GoPro. But for me, the camera was just the beginning. I immediately invested in a professional dome port because I had a specific vision in mind: a "split-shot" (half-underwater, half-above) featuring a horse and a model in the pristine waters of the Samaná Peninsula.

The "Split-Shot" Masterpiece

The goal was technically demanding: capturing the horse’s legs underwater while simultaneously framing the model and the horse’s head above the surface. Using the new GoPro and the dome, I finally executed the shot I had been dreaming of. The result was a stunning display of tropical elegance and technical precision. In the world of commercial photography, having the right gear is only half the battle; knowing how to use it to create a "wow" factor is what counts.

Going Viral: GoPro Photo of the Year

The impact of that single image was massive. It went viral across social media, being reposted by every major GoPro official page worldwide. The ultimate validation came when it was ranked in the Top 3 "Photo of the Year" by GoPro globally. It was a full-circle moment—from a crashed drone at Playa Ballenas to a world-class recognition, proving that in the Dominican Republic, every challenge is an opportunity to create something legendary.

Conclusion

This experience defines the spirit of Tropical Mirage. Whether it's solving a logistical nightmare or pushing the limits of action photography, the goal is always the same: to capture the extraordinary.
